Apple could soon release a USB-C version its second-gen AirPods Pro. According to Apple analyst MingChi Kuo the company could begin shipping the earbuds in the second and third quarters this year with a USB case.
Kuo says that this doesn’t apply for Apple’s standard AirPod model models. Kuo made the comment in response to @aaronp613 ‘s tweet. He noticed references to an A3048 AirPods model and an A29680 AirPods case model in iOS 16.4.
Apple’s second-gen AirPods Pros was launched last September. It features a Lightning port, compatibility with MagSafe and Qi chargers, as well as compatibility with Apple Watch chargers. A speaker emitting a sound when they are located with Find My app and a loop that allows you to attach a lanyard to the case were some of the other features the company added.
It’s not yet clear whether the new AirPods Pros will include any other changes or if Apple will sell the USB-C case separately. Apple has previously released updated AirPods charging cases, including the MagSafe option for the AirPods Pro 2021 and the Lightning-only charging case last year for the third-gen AirPods. Apple does not sell these cases separately.
It’s not surprising that Apple is moving away from Lightning. The European Union will require USB-C charging ports for many new electronic devices next years. Last year, stated that it would change the iPhone connector to USB-C. rumors suggest that the iPhone 15 will include the port.
Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman suggested that Apple would bring USB-C to the AirPods and Mac accessories in 2024. Kuo previously reported that fourth-generation AirPods could include a USB-C charging box. He also stated that they could be launched in the second half 2024, or the first half 2025.
