Apple announced on its iOS 17 preview site that the upcoming iOS 17 update would add daily crosswords to the Apple News App, but only for News Plus members. Crosswords may make News Plus more appealing to subscribers. Currently, News Plus is primarily a subscription service that offers access to digital publications and audio versions for some articles.
Apple News will be in a closer race with The New York Times now that it has crossword puzzles. Apple News will soon be able to access the NYT’s crossword puzzles. The NYT has its own crosswords that you can find in the NYT Games and main NYT apps. However, like the NYT, these crosswords are only available with a paid Apple News subscription. In the NYT apps you can also play free games such as the Wordle and the mini crossword.
Apple’s site does not include images of its crosswords. We don’t even know if Apple makes them or sources them from another crossword maker. The company did not immediately respond to a comment request.
