Bill Gates, Microsoft cofounder, stated to Reuters that calls to halt the development of artificial Intelligence will not “solve any challenges ahead”. This was his first public comment since an open letter sparked a discussion about the future technology.
The technologist-turned-philanthropist said it would be better to focus on how best to use the developments in AI, as it was hard to understand how a pause could work globally.
After an open-letter was published last week, it demanded that an urgent halt be taken in the development and maintenance of systems “more powerful than Microsoft-backed (MSFT.O). OpenAI’s GPT-4, which can hold conversation with humans, write songs, and summarise long documents, was put into action.
Experts, including Steve Wozniak (AAPL.O cofounder), stated in the letter that society must evaluate the potential risks and benefits.

“Clearly, there are huge benefits to these items… we just need to identify the problematic areas.”

Gates is currently focusing full-time on the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. However, Gates has been a strong supporter of AI and called it revolutionary.
He stated that he believes AI should help to reduce some of the worst inequalities around the globe in a blog entitled ” The Age of AI has started”, published on March 21st, one day before the open-letter.
In the interview, he also stated that it would be difficult to enforce any pause details.
He said, “I don’t really understand why they’re saying that could stop.” “But there are many different opinions in this field.”
Gates stated that there were obvious benefits but they had to be able to identify the ‘tricky areas.
