Google DeepMind is the result of the merger between DeepMind and Google Brain, an artificial intelligence company that Alphabet acquired in 2014. Sundar Pichai of Alphabet and Google, in a post, said that the combined teams will “significantly speed up our progress in AI.”
DeepMind CEO Demis hassabis, who was previously the senior vice president for Google Research and Health and co-founded Brain, will now be the chief scientist of Google DeepMind and Google Research.
Hassabis wrote in an internal memo, “We have the opportunity to work together with our colleagues in the Google Product Areas to develop AI products and research that will improve the lives and industries of billions of individuals, advance science and serve diverse communities.” By creating Google DeepMind I believe that we can achieve this future sooner. We must solve the most difficult scientific and engineering problems of our time to build an AI that is more general and capable.
DeepMind has had a tiff with Google in the past. DeepMind lost its long-running bid to gain independence from Google in 2021 as Google began pushing DeepMind towards commercializing its research. Google is likely to want to combine their research teams as it dives deeper into the AI sector.
Google launched Bard , a rival to ChatGPT, Bing Chat, and Bing Chat, in March. It is a pretty strange, and it often did not perform as well as its competition in our tests soon after it launched. Pichai promised updates were on their way. However, Google employees criticised the product before its launch. also urged the leadership to not release it.
Pichai announced that DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis would lead the development “of the most capable and responsible AI general systems”, according to Pichai. This research, Pichai added, “will power the next-generation of our products, services, and technologies.”
Brain, the Google Research group merging with DeepMind is focused on AI, machine learning, and AI. Pichai stated that Google Research will continue to work on areas such as algorithms, theory, privacy, security, quantum computing and health.
Pichai also sent an extended memo to his staff about the changes.
Pichai announced that James Manyika will oversee Google Research along with his current teams. The memo stated that Manyika would report to Dean, and the changes would take place in the coming weeks.
