The iOS16 and iOS16 iOS1_ released last year featured a variety of new features, including sweet lock screen customization options. Jay Peters, Verge reporter, called one the greatest successes of 2022. Apple’s iOS 16 is not yet finished. Iterative versions have been made available for testing via the company’s beta program. Apple’s latest public betas, iOS 16.5 and iPadOS16.5, have been released. These new features include the ability to ask Siri for screen recordings to be started, as well as being able to ask Siri for screen recording options.
Download the most recent public beta releases now — at your own risk. Once the beta software is available, here’s how you can install it on your iPhone/iPad.
Before we begin, let me warn you: beta software can contain bugs and is not yet finished. Apple’s betas are generally stable but you need to be careful before installing them on any devices you depend on. These betas may not contain all features that will be included in the final release. Your experience will vary depending on which apps you use. Finally, in the event that you decide to install an app, we recommend backing it up just in case.
What are the new features in iOS 16?
iOS 16 was released in September 2022. It included , a treasure trove of new features. These include the ability customize your lock screen using new fonts, colors and widgets; linking your lock screen to Focus; rolling notifications; major updates to Messages including the ability edit text after it’s been sent; Live Text for video; and many other new features and updates.
Other features were added to the original release: encrypted iCloud, simpler to swipe notifications and push notification support. New Emoji.
What are the new features in iPadOS 16?
New features in iPadOS include a revamped Home app, a whiteboard app, Passkey support in Safari and many other interesting new features. Stage Manager, which allows apps with overlapping windows to be displayed and lets you drag-and-drop windows onto other screens is the best deal. It only works on iPads with M1 or M2 chips. Stage Manager was not the multitasking solution many had hoped for .

How to install iOS 16 and iPadOS 16 betas
A new iOS 16.4 update has made it simpler than ever to download and install public beta versions of iOS and iPadOS. The new Software Update feature allows you to change from the stable channel to the beta channel easily without having to download and install a beta profile. You can also opt out of this feature.
Here are the steps. If you have not already, upgrade to iOS 16.4/iPadOS 16.4
- Go to Settings > All > Software Update.
- There should be an iOS 16.4 or iPadOS 164 update. Select Download and install, and then follow the instructions.
When you are up-to-date:
- Go to Apple’s beta portal using your Safari browser. Sign up using the primary Apple ID that you use on your device. Sign in if you have already signed up and choose To get started
- Signing in for the first-time requires that you enroll your Apple ID into Apple’s Beta Software Program. You will need to agree to several terms and conditions. This is at your own risk.
- After you have agreed to the terms, you can now enroll. Your Apple ID is your public beta pass. You don’t need profiles downloaded like previous versions.
- Optional – If you would like to learn more about the beta program, scroll down and review Apple’s information on providing feedback. (Select iOS or iPadOS under the submenu) for more pertinent info. You can choose Start Your iPhone/iPad to be greeted by a reminder about how to back up your data onto a Mac.
- Go back to Settings >General >Software Update. Now you should see the BetaUpdates option under Automated Updates. Select Beta updates and verify that the correct Apple ID appears at the bottom. Tap on the ID to select A different Apple ID.
- Select iPadOS 16 Private Beta under Updates.
- After all this is done, you will be able to update your software as usual by going to settings > General > Software update. The iOS 16 update should be visible there. Select Download and install or and follow the instructions.
How to install iOS 16 beta on iOS 16.3 or earlier
Apple supports the following profile method if you don’t have iOS 16.4 installed, but don’t want or need to wait.
- Go to Apple’s beta portal using your Safari browser. Sign up with the primary Apple ID that you use on your device. Sign in if you have already signed up and choose To get started
- Signing in for the first-time requires that you enroll your Apple ID in Apple’s Beta Software Program. You will need to agree to several terms and conditions. This is at your own risk.
- Scroll down once you have agreed to give feedback. (Select iOS/iPadOS in the submenu) for more information. Select Get Started to be greeted by a reminder about how to back up your iPhone/iPad content to a Mac for reverting to an earlier state.
- Scroll down until you see a button that reads Download profile. Tap on it. The website will display a warning saying that it is trying to download configuration profiles. Select Allow. A pop-up window will appear advising you that you can create a new profile using the Settings app.
- Open the Settings application. Near the top, you will find a new section called Profil Downloaded. You’ll be able to download the beta software if you select it.
- Select Install at the top-right corner. Tap Install to continue.
- For the profile to activate, you may have to restart your phone.
- After all this is done, you will be able to update your software as usual by going to settings > General > Software update. The iOS 16 update should be visible there. Select Download and install or and follow the instructions.
