Mutulu was more than an activist; he represented struggle and resilience. Shakur was an integral member of Black Liberation Army during America’s civil rights era and championed Black rights, serving as Tupac Shakur’s stepfather-mentor until Tupac’s untimely death in 1996. This fact can be attested by his music career – something many can attest to today.
Mutulu and the Black Liberation Movement Shakur’s involvement with both the Black Panther Party and Republic of New Afrika was testament to his devotion to their cause, from advocating civil rights, organizing community projects in health and social service areas, as well as contributing to the Black Liberation Movement. Although Shakur was often celebrated for these endeavors, his activism would come at the cost of controversy as evidenced by being charged in 1981 in relation to Brinks armored vehicle robbery (for which he would ultimately serve a sentence) which would forever associate his name with his legacy.
Mutulu Shakur’s unfortunate life took an unfortunate turn when he received a diagnosis of bone marrow carcinoma in 2019. Although he battled hard against it, over time his health steadily worsened over time despite efforts. As activists highlighted his condition as evidence of injustice within prison walls and demanded his release through activism campaigns calling attention to Mutulu’s failing condition and need to spend his remaining prison time more humanely, an increase of activism for his release ensued.
Compassionate Release and Final Days
Their efforts paid off when Shakur was granted compassionate release in January 2023. He spent his final months spending precious moments with those close to him while struggling with terminal cancer.
Mutulu Sakur’s Death
Mutulu Shakur had long battled both disease and system for 12 years until his passing away at Federal Medical Center Lexington due to bone marrow carcinoma on July 6, 2023 from bone cancer. With her passing came an end of that battle against both entities.
Mutulu Shakur has long been remembered as an inspirational figure who displayed unfaltering dedication in fighting for social justice. Tupac Shakur left behind an extensive legacy which will remain inspiring long after he is gone; one which celebrates strength through perseverance while facing obstacles with confidence and resilience.
