Nina Aouilk was born and raised in London as an Indian immigrant and speaks Punjabi fluently; connecting her Western lifestyle and heritage. Nina experienced many upheavals throughout her journey – beginning with an arranged wedding at 17 until she took an unthinking stand to end it at 21 despite facing stigma from family, society, and media; eventually emerging a powerful advocate against gender-based abuse and domestic violence.
Nina Aouilk was awarded with an international platform at TEDx event 2021 to showcase her commitment to fighting gender inequality and honor killings through activism. Aouilk credits past experiences for inspiring her activism today.
Nina suffered physical, psychological and sexual abuse as a child from both her parents. After taking action to defend herself against these assaults from both sides, her father was sent off to prison for kidnapping; and Nina then attended an Indian academic institution to complete her degree program. Nina now dedicates her life to raising awareness around honor killings, abuse and other forms of violence so as to shield future generations.
