Google Home will soon include smart garage door controls. One Reddit user, ( noticed by Google), posted an image showing the large pill-shaped toggle controls for open/close that have quietly appeared on the app. This design is similar to Google Home’s pill-shaped toggle.
This feature is only available in the Google Home preview app and has not been released yet. Google has been testing its updated Home app since October of last year. Google I/O is around the corner. We might be able to get more details on this feature, as well as other Google Home updates.
9to5Google confirmed that the preview controls work with garage doors from Tailwind, Nexx and other manufacturers. However, there is no list of products currently supported. We have contacted Google to get more information. If we receive a response, we will update the story.
Google Home has been displaying garage door systems for some time, but it didn’t have in-app control. Users were forced to use Google Assistant instead to control garage door with voice commands. (This usually requires a PIN to ensure additional security). If you’d like to test out the toggle in the app, you will need to request a invite to the Google Home preview. If you are impatient, there are annoying third-party solutions that will force the Google Home app to only allow limited garage door control.
