Onyx announced today a new tablet that has an E Ink display with the ability to show colors. It is the 10.3-inch Boox Tab ultra C. This is the first E Ink tablet in the Tab Series to have a Kaleido 2 E Ink Screen, the most recent version of E Ink’s color electronic paper technology. The display is still limited to only 4,096 colours, but it allows for higher color resolution.
Expect colors to be less vibrant than an iPad. Color content is displayed at 150ppi, compared to 300ppi in black and white. The result is that colors appear more pastel and subtle, but still more vibrant than the Onyx Boox Nova Air’s display from last year. The color E Ink was equipped with an old-generation screen that had a 100ppi resolution. This, according to my colleague Jon Porter, caused colors to look washed-out.While the Onyx Bux Tab Ultra C isn’t quite as vivid as an iPad, its colors should be more sharp than those of the Onyx Bux Nova Air C.Onyx
The Kaleido 3 screen is not only color-rich, but also equipped with a frontlight and technology to reduce blue light. Kaledo 3 is advertised as being more responsive. This means that playing videos should be faster than on older color E-ink screens. We haven’t yet tested this claim.
Beyond these differences, however, the Boox Tab Ultra C remains a tablet similar to its monochrome equivalent, the Boox Tab Ultra released late last year. Both tablets have the same 16-megapixel camera on their rear with OCR. Onyx’s camera is designed to scan documents, not take pet pictures.
Both the monochrome tablets and the color ones are powered by an octacore Qualcomm CPU. Each tablet has four different refresh modes that you can use for various tasks. For example, a slower mode is available for reading books while a faster option is available for watching videos and browsing the internet. Each tablet runs a modified version Android 11 with a 6300mAh battery and 4GB RAM. It also has 128GB expandable storage. Each tablet also comes with 10GB free cloud storage from Onyx, available to both new and existing users.
Boox Tab Ultra C will be available for pre-order on the official Boox Shop from May 10th. The price is $599.99, which includes a Pen2 Pro stylus. can preorder the Boox Tab Ultra C from the official Boox Shop. Onyx is also offering a keyboard case worth $109.99 for just $50 as part of the preorder.
